Story line:

In Paris, Trelkovsky, a shy bureaucrat, rents an old apartment without a bathroom in which the previous tenant, Egyptologist Simone Schul, committed suicide. The unfriendly concierge (Shelley Winters) and stern landlord Mr. Z set strict rules for behavior, and Trelkowski feels his neighbors are stalking him. Meanwhile, he visits Simone in the hospital and befriends her girlfriend Stella. After Simone’s death, Trelkovsky feels obsessed with her and believes that his landlord and neighbors are plotting to get him to commit suicide as well.
